Choong-Sik Kim and Dong-Eun Medical Museum

Abstract
The current Dong-Eun Medical Museum at Yonsei University College of Medicine was born out of the
Foundation, Dong-Eun Educational Institution. This article was written based on materials that are still
present to describe the process of the establishment of Dong-Eun Educational Institution, process of the
establishment and operation of Dong-Eun Medical Museum.
In 1948 Dong-Eun Choong-Sik Kim donated 920,000 pyungs of land ; based on this donation, Dong-Eun
Educational Institute was established on June 11, 1949. The purposes of Dong-Eun Educational Institute
were to sponsor the development of Severance Medical College and to give scholarships to needy medical
students. In 1974 Dong-Eun Educational Institute decided to sell off its real estate and to establish a
medical museum, i.e., Dong-Eun Medical Museum, within College of Medicine, Yonsei University.
With the collection of relics and securing of the display areas, Dong-Eun Medical Museum was finally
opened on 23 August, 1976. Dong-Eun Medical Museum was the place containing historical materials that
were to be used not only by medical students of Yonsei University but also students, professors who
related to other schools. In 1980 Dong-Eun Educational Institute donated its collections to College of
Medicine, Yonsei University, and soon after, the Foundation was dismantled and the remaining funds were
donated to Kwang-Hye Scholarship Foundation to be used for scholarships. Then, Dong-Eun Medical
Museum was transferred to Medical Museum of the College of Medicine, and Dong-Eun Medical Museum
was to be reopened on January 14, 2000.
